How to care for exterior blinds, roller shutters and awnings in autumn?
What does your shading technology need before winter? Is the care of exterior blinds, roller shutters or insect screens demanding? Find out you shouldn’t forget before winter.

Caring for exterior blinds before winter

We wrote an expert’s report on proper cleaning of exterior blinds, but we will summarize the procedure once again:

  • clean the blinds tilted into vertical position
  • moisten the slats with water
  • wash them with a cloth or soft sponge using a soap solution
  • do not use rough sponges or rags!
  • rinse the washed blinds with clean water and dry them

Like other types of exterior shading, it is advisable to wash exterior blinds twice a year. It is ideal to do this after the end of summer and after the end of winter, i.e. in autumn and spring - after the end of summer, the slats need to be washed to remove pollen sediments, and after winter, to remove settled dust particles from heating.

For all types of exterior shading, avoid using abrasive cleaning agents (sand, powders, etc.), solvents, organic thinners and other aggressive cleaning agents that can irreversibly damage the shading technology. Do not use steam cleaners either.

Cleaning exterior roller shutters

For at least part of the day, exterior window roller shutters are usually rolled up in boxes, which protects them from dirt, but yet they collect a lot of dust and dirt in half a year. To clean them, proceed as follows:

  • clean exterior roller shutters when pulled down
  • with a soft brush, remove dust and other dirt first
  • wash the roller shutter with soapy solution using a sponge or cloth
  • rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth

Maintenance of screen roller shutters

Screen roller shutters require as gentle maintenance as possible. In the case of regular dirt, it should be sufficient to wipe them gently or clean them slightly with a low-power vacuum cleaner. If you need to clean them more thoroughly:

  • pull down the screen roller shutters completely before cleaning
  • gently wipe or vacuum them lightly with a vacuum cleaner set to low power
  • clean them with a soft cloth soaked in soapy water
  • rinse with clean water
  • let dry completely before pulling them up

How to clean awnings

Preparing your balcony for winter is not limited just to the awnings - we gave you information about everything you need to do on your balcony before winter here. The process of cleaning awnings is very similar to cleaning screen roller shutters. Clean awnings in autumn as follows:

  • wipe or vacuum the fabric gently with a vacuum cleaner set to low power
  • clean with a soft cloth soaked in soapy water
  • rinse with clean water
  • let the fabric dry completely before rolling back the awning

Autumn care for insect screens

Insect screens are a great help if you don't want to have bunch of flies in your home. When cleaning them, you need to be very careful not to tear the mesh.

  • wash the frames of the screens with soapy water, rinse with clean water and dry with a soft cloth
  • wipe the screens gently or vacuum them with a vacuum cleaner set to low power
  • you can lightly spray the screen with clean water
  • let the screen dry completely
