Lighting (not only) for pergolas: how to choose the best light for garden summerhouse and garden?
Although the sun sets late in the summer, it would still be a shame to deprive yourself of the opportunity to spend pleasant summer evenings in a pergola, summerhouse or terrace. Outdoor lighting has its own rules - read which safety standards it must meet and how to light even with no electricity.

How to choose lighting (not only) for pergolas?

You can adapt the ARTOSI bioclimatic pergola to virtually all conditions: the scorching sun, rain and snow will be solved by tilting slats (the roof can be divided into several sections and the slats in each of them can be tilted separately), shading from the sides will be ensured by additional installation of screen roller shutters or exterior blinds. Evening lighting will be provided by a LED strip, the integration of which on the sides of the pergola extension is directly planned. Have you read about the other advantages of the ARTOSI pergola?

MIRA 2 and MIRA 4 pergolas allow the integration of LED spotlights. In addition, there is a whole range of portable lights that you can place on a table or on the ground.

Outdoor lighting for terraces and pergolas

If you have a pergola anchored to the wall, your choice will be expanded to include a wide range of wall lights. It is worth considering placing lights with a motion sensor in areas that are frequently walked through. This will make it easier for you to bring and take away dishes, for example. A light chain that you can place anywhere will look nice. And if you need to light up somewhere,  LED lamp with a clip or the aforementioned portable lamp will come in handy.

All lights that you use outdoors should have a protection rating of at least IP44 - the higher the number, the better the device is protected. The first digit indicates the quality of protection against ingress of solid objects, the second one indicates resistance to splashing water.

Lantern for pergola

Lanterns belong among the most romantic lights – they are available not only as pendant or floor lamps, but also as wall lamps or classic portable ones. The source of lighting from a lantern does not have to be just a candle: there are LED lanterns, solar-powered lanterns and even lamps equipped with insect-repellent fillings. And if you like genuine fire, get a retro kerosene lamp.

Solar lighting for pergola

Don't you have an electrical power socket near your pergola? Outdoor solar lights can kill two birds with one stone. They are charged with solar energy during the day and after dark this energy is used to illuminate your pergola. Solar LED lamps and lights are available in many decors and types: the lights can be pendant, attached to gutter, jammed in the ground and even underwater in your garden pond or swimming pool. There are stone-shaped lights that are simply placed on the lawn, as well as solar LED chains.

Terrace with no pergola

If for some reason you don't want a pergola and prefer uncovered terrace, you can use various string lights that can be quickly packed away in case of rain.

How to repel insects

Lighting in a pergola can attract mosquitoes and other troublesome insects. You can secure your front doors and windows with insect screens, which we have already written about, but outdoors you need to use electric repellents or scents that are unpleasant for insects. Mosquitoes are repelled, for example, by repellent candles with citronella, which are available in most drugstores.

You can also make an insect repellent candle at home - just melt beeswax and add a few drops of essential oil with a citrus scent. For greater effect, you can add cloves. Place a wick in a glass and pour the melted wax over it.

Various aromatic plants also repel insects. Plant lavender, marigold or some herbs and unwelcome visitors will fly away to neighbouring garden.

Plants that work as natural repellents:

  • Calendula
  • Lavender
  • Cuban oregano
  • Geranium
  • Nasturtium
  • Mint
  • Basil
  • Lemon balm
  • Rosemary

Less stuff, more space: Japanese inspiration for minimalism
Minimalist interior is not just about "having few things at home". It is mainly about the feeling of lightness, clarity and peace that your home gives you every day. When you don't have chaos around you, you breathe better, think better, rest better and work better. Japanese minimalism can be a great inspiration in this because it combines respect for space, light and natural materials with functional elements such as sliding panels, Japanese blinds and Japanese walls. In this article, we will therefore look at how Japanese-style minimalism can be transferred to a typical Czech apartment or house and how Japanese walls and other shading techniques can help you with this.
